Sewing Registration - First Annual Golden Anchor Quilting Quilts of Valor Retreat
We will have more details as we get closer, but know that saving the date to participate takes time and planning! We have opened registration, and will update information on our social media platforms, in our newsletter, and with emails to registered participants as often as possible. Our current plan is to keep registration free, seek corporate sponsorship for fabric, food, and supplies. Provide as many meals during the retreat as possible, and allow folks to register as sewists or helpers. Anyone who registers is asked to be comitted to the entire 3 days of particpation. We are asking this to have the greatest number of quilts completed in the retreat time frame. We plan to work with the Quilts of Valor chapters, and have quilts distributed through our local chapter, with a presentation ceremony at the VA in White River Junction, VT once the quilts are completed. Once we know how many quilt tops we have completed, we will schedule a binding party for folks to return to the WRJ VA and help us get all of the tops bound and ready for the presentation! We will include typical retreat activites in this event such as prizes, games, challenges, and fun! Register early to reserve your spot, as space is limited to 50 sewists and 50 helpers!
From the Quilts of Valor website:
"A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.
Fabric used for a Quilt of Valor should be quality, 100% cotton fabric appropriate for adults.
A Quilt of Valor does not have to be red, white and blue, but patriotic colors are very popular with recipients.
Patterns and blocks can be of any design suitable for a patriotic theme. Browse patterns.
Avoid juvenile, gender or branch specific fabrics, unless the recipient is known to you.
A Quilt of Valor is to be large enough to cover an average-sized adult, with an ideal size approximately 60” x 80.” Finished size can be no smaller than 55” x 65” and no larger than 72” x 90.”
The Quilt consists of a top, batting, and backing. It must be machine or hand quilted. A tied quilt is not acceptable for a Quilt of Valor.
Backings provided to The LongArmy Volunteer must be 8″ wider in width and 8″ longer in length.
QOVF Members in good standing may request quilting of their tops by a LongArmy Volunteer, free of charge.
Use quality, low loft batting such as cotton, cotton blends, polyester or polyester blends. Quilting should be appropriate for the quilt and not overly dense, which can reduce the loft of the quilt.
Double fold, also known as French Fold, binding is recommended for durability. Hand stitch or neatly machine stitch binding.
A Quilt of Valor must be labeled as such, and include the name of the veteran or service member. See our Policies and Procedures for additional information."
